North Shore Masters Sprint Meet

The North Shore Masters Sprint Meet is set to go on Saturday October 14 from 2:30 to 7:00 PM at Harry Jerome Pool. The meet is sanctioned by SwimBC. Meet registration starts on September 5.

As always we need swimmers and volunteers.

If you are planning to swim, you will need to register with Swimming Canada by contacting Khosro at [email protected] to start the process and register for the meet once it is sanctioned. Khosro needs your Full Name, Date of Birth, email Address, Phone Number and Full Home Address (including postal code and city).

If you are not going to be swimming we would like you to consider volunteering to help run the meet. We will need people for timing, welcoming participants, providing official refreshments, assisting Khosro, stroke and turn officials.

MSABC News

Congratulations to Khosro for his election to the Board of MSABC as Director of Competition. He tells me every day that things are changing at MSABC. For example, MSABC now has a list of all potential meets during the upcoming season. Quite a few are committed. Great for planning and amortizing your Swimming Canada membership!

Recent Workouts at Harry Jerome

After the recent Video Clinic, many swimmers, if not all, discovered that there were some problems with their strokes. Some collectively asked for more drills to work on their strokes. There will be a great opportunity to demonstrate improvement for the North Shore Masters meet in October.

COHO Swim

When I went to sign up for the COHO swim at the end of July, I was shocked to discover that it had been canceled. I later found the cancelation was due to a Life Guard staffing problem. The staff at Harry Jerome have recently came up with the idea of offering Harry Jerome pool as a backup if this problem ever occurs in the future. The idea would be to reserve three hours of pool time on the day of the Coho Swim at Harry Jerome. Four swimmers would be assigned to each lane for one hour. As with open water COHO, 1500 and 3000 metre options would be provided but your swim time would be limited to one hour. Wet suits would be optional. The fee for this alternative swim would be sufficient to cover pool staffing and a reasonable profit for the COHO society. Any other suggestions or ideas?

55Plus Games

Attended the 55Plus Games in Abbotsford last week. The scope of this event is amazing! There were about 30 sports represented. It was an excellent event for people of a certain age. The weather cooperated. The youngest swimmer had just turned 55 and the oldest was 99 and looking forward to braking records in the 100 to 104 age group next year. The swim event was held at the outdoor Abbotsford Centennial Pool. Zone 4, the Lower Mainland zone, placed second overall in swimming. Everyone left thinking favourably about the next games in Salmon Arm in 2024. Had the opportunity to do lots of swims and my first ever 10,000 metre run on the awesome University of the Fraser Valley track. Here is what happens when you give a group of 55Plusers a boat, some swords, pirate hats and put them in the pool with a crocodile and sharks. Betty Brussel (age 99) is the princess!
